To help hold the attention of younger children, have an assistant with you who can hold their attention by talking to them, making noise, or shaking toys. You can also have younger children sit with their parent (or other trusted person) and let the parent know the shot is coming so that they can have the child ready for it.
School aged children like to help you, so you can also try to ask them to 'be your helper' at the beginning of the shoot so that they will feel more important and be more cooperative.
When working with pets, pose the group on ground so that it is easiest to include the pets. To keep the family clean, place a blanket of neutral colors on the ground.
